Best Kitchen Investments…

My air-fryer is without a doubt, one of the best kitchen investments I have ever made. To be honest with you all, I was very skeptical at first. Even though I had seen hundreds of people on pinterst and instagram rave about their air-fryers, I was hesitant to spend that much money on one. However, they went on sale a few months ago, and I took the plunge and bought one. Let me tell you, it has been a game-changer!

I cook all sorts of meats, fish and veggies in it, multiple times a week. I honestly cannot imagine my life without one now. It is one of those products that I highly recommend to everyone.

Drumsticks Are Now A Thing Around Here…

If you have read some of my previous recipes/posts, you might know that I am a “breast girl.” I was never fussed about wings or legs of chicken, until recently.

However, chicken drumsticks are infinitely cheaper than breasts, and I thought I would step out of my comfort zone and buy some drumsticks. This was a great decision.

They are incredible.

Crispy on the outside, juicy and tender on the inside, and my family (especially my kids) could not get enough of them!

Ingredients Needed…

The seasonings I used can be easily be modified to suit your taste buds. Increase or decrease the amount you use, or even add in a few extras spices. This recipe is super versatile.

  • Chicken DrumsticksTips on how to get them super crispy are below
  • Avocado Oil This can be substituted for olive oil.
  • Baking Powder This has to be aluminum-free and gluten-free.
  • PaprikaBoth regular or smoked paprika work well.
  • Chili Powder Because I cater for my kids, I use mild chili powder. However, if you like things spicy, try Hot Chili Powder instead, just reduce the amount so it’s not killer.
  • Garlic PowderIf you like things garlic-y, add a smidge more.
  • CuminJust a tad of cumin really amplifies the taste of these drumsticks.
  • Salt & PepperThese can be adjusted, based on your taste buds.

Super Crispy Tips & Tricks…

  • Pat Dry With A Paper Towel – After removing the chicken from the packaging, pat them dry with a paper towel, to help remove some of the moisture (resulting in the best crispy skin.)
  • Don’t Over-Crowd – Over-crowding or over-lapping the chicken drumsticks will prevent them cooking evenly. So depending on how big your air-fryer is, you may need to cook them in two batches.
  • Don’t Over- or Under-Cook – Chicken is good to eat once it reaches 74ºC/ 165ºF. To make sure you get an accurate reading, test them with a meat thermometer, ensuring that it doesn’t hit the bone.
  • Don’t Omit The Baking Powder – This ingredient is CRUCIAL for removing extra moisture from the chicken and really “crispy-ing these beauties up.
  • Evenly Coating – I find the best way to coat them evenly, is by using my hands. Just make sure to thoroughly wash them with warm water and soap after touching raw meat.
  • Turn Them Over – Using tongs, flip/turn them over halfway through (around the 12 minute mark) to ensure they get crispy all over.

Want This Recipe But Don’t Have An Air-Fryer…

Ok, so you’ve seen this recipe, want to eat these delicious drumsticks, and unfortunately don’t have an air-fryer. Well, don’t click away because below is a method for crispy drumsticks in the oven.

  1. Preheat the oven to 200ºC (400ºF).
  2. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and lightly spray it with cooking oil (this will help prevent the drumsticks sticking to the foil).
  3. Prepare the chicken following steps 1-2.
  4. Bake them for 35-40 minutes, turning them over halfway through (around the 20-minute mark), until the internal temperatures of the drumsticks reach 74ºC / 165ºF.

  • 8-10 chicken drumsticks
  • 1 tbsp avocado or olive oil
  • 1 tbsp gluten-free baking powder
  • 3 tsp paprika (smoked or regular)
  • 2 tsp chili powder (mild or spicy, depending on your preference)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp cumin
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper


  • In a small mixing bowl, combine the baking powder, paprika, chili powder, garlic powder, cumin, salt and pepper. Set aside.
  • Pat the drumsticks dry with a paper towel, and transfer them into a large mixing bowl and toss them with the avocado oil.
  • Sprinkle on the spices, and evenly coat each drumstick with these ingredients. Allow them to sit for 5-10 minutes.
  • Preheat the air-fryer to 200ºC (400ºF) and lightly spray the base of it with cooking spray.
  • Lay the drumsticks in the fryer, ensuring that they don't overlap.
  • Cook for 25 minutes, turning them over halfway through, until the internal temperature of the drumsticks reach 74ºC/ 165ºF.
